Consolea Rubescens or run over cactus is a cactus of the most curious Opuntia family. It is extremely flat except for the base, which is slightly cylindrical, but quickly flattens. It grows in a tree shape and can surprisingly reach six meters in height. The base apart from being cylindrical is slightly compressed from the sides, and can be up to fifteen centimeters in diameter.
The trunk is oval and elongated, dark green or greenish red, twenty-five centimeters long. The spines are grouped into groups of eight centimeters, and each spine of these is white and can be between one and six centimeters long, but sometimes there is only the areole to say this somehow and the spines are not there.
Flowering can occur from early spring to early summer. The flowers may be red, orange and yellow and are six centimeters long by two in diameter. They are very attractive to both the human eye and insects. A spherical red fruit will appear, which is egg-shaped and has a diameter of eight centimeters.
It is very resistant to drought and can be both full sun and semi shaded. The irrigation must therefore be very moderate. In spring, water must be provided once every fortnight, in summer once a week and in autumn irrigate only once and it must not receive more water until the cold has passed and the minimum temperatures are equal to or above six positive degrees. Before irrigation, we must ensure that the substrate is completely dry. It can hold to zero degrees without problems.
Finally, it has not many enemies, we just have to make sure that it’s not too humid, and in this way, we will avoid waterlogging and root rot
