The cactus I present to you today is the Auriantica Matucana subs. Polzii, commonly called Matucana Polzii. It is native to the Peruvian regions of Marañón and Huánuco. Small in size and slow growth, this matucana requires direct exposure to the sun and a dry and warm climate, as it does not resist temperatures below six positive degrees. For this reason, the ideal temperature it should have during the rest period is between ten and fifteen degrees positive.

During the strongest sunny days, that is, in summer, some shade may be provided by a sunset to prevent possible burns, especially in young specimens. It does not grow much more than eight centimeters in diameter by five centimeters high. It’s a perfect cactus to have in a gardener on the balcony of a flat.

The flowers are usually very colorful red and have a size of about five centimeters in diameter. It can vary from red to orange and have a variation between these two colors (red, orange).

The irrigation, it is important to water it moderately in spring as long as the safety temperature (five degrees minimum temperature) has been exceeded. In the summer, water once every fifteen days waiting for the substrate to be completely dry. When the cold begins, that is, in autumn, irrigate once a month and stop providing water all winter and start providing water again at the beginning of spring. This point must be taken into account because they are particularly sensitive to excess humidity, as this will cause roots to rot.

Finally, matucanas in general are usually very easy to reproduce, only the little plants who come to base and around the mother should be separated. If you’re a little more expert, it can also be achieved through the seeds that offer the brown fruits that come out when the flower has died.
