Echinocactus grusonii var. albispinus, more commonly recognized as a golden barrel cactus, is native to Mexico. It is also known as the seat of the mother-in-law, the only difference between it and the authentic one, Echinocereus grusonii, is that one has golden or yellow spikes and the other has white, hence the scientific name “albispinus”.
It tolerates the sun very well, but as you have seen with other species, when the sun is at its highest point, it is advisable to give it half-shadow to prevent possible burns on protruding tips, called ribs, which are defined as years go by and cactus mature.
