Cactus Gymnocalycium Saglionis

It is a cactus that is common to nurses and collectors.

Gymnocalycium Saglinois is a cactus endemic to Argentina and is commonly known as Giant chin cactus. It is globular in shape and eventually becomes columnar. The body has between fifteen and thirty ribs that can be either straight or spiraling and of these, in the areoles they come from ten to fifteen radial spines and between two and five central ones, all yellowish or brownish, measuring two to four centimeters.

When it is an adult specimen, you must know that it reaches a considerable size, because it can be up to thirty centimeters in height by forty in diameter. The flowers appear on the top and are tubular and also relatively large, three to five centimeters in diameter, and with colors that may be white or pale pink. The fruits that they leave are spherical in shape and may be red or brownish. It must be said that, compared to flowers, they are also quite large because they are between two and five centimeters long.

It is a species that is important to be in direct sun, both for its own development and to create flowers when the season is in this case from early spring to late summer. If you have it inside your house and want to put it on a test outside, you have to wait for it to get used to it, because if you don’t wait, you’ll just get it burned.

The irrigation must be quite scarce throughout the season as it has very high drought resistance. As always, if you have to make sure that the substrate is completely dry, and the way you bring water is a bit different (everything, you can also use it with some other kind of cactus if it’s the case that you have more): fill in a container and submerge half a test and leave it the time necessary, which is two or three hours for the earth to fully shield, then it’s time to remove it and let it dry until we think it necessary.

Finally, it is quite resistant to pests, but as could not otherwise be the cottony mealybug can affect it if it is not swallowed when necessary. It is also resistant to frost, holding up to two degrees negative.
