Cactus Mammillaria Karwinskiana

Honors the Bavarian naturalist and plant collector Baron Friedrich Wilhelm of Karwinski.

Category:

Mammillaria Karwinskiana also called Bisnaga of Karwinski is named after the naturist who discovered it. It is native to Mexico, but is distributed in the states of Puebla, Oaxaca and Guerrero. Is a cactus easy to distinguish by its shape and color: a body between light green and blue, black and white spines (black at the base and white at the tip), white oldness between the body and the spike and the group of spines that grow radially, rise in pair and towards the center (between four and six around). It is a curious cactus because it can both branch up to fifteen centimeters high and make little plants.

As for the flowers, I have seen two colors, which are yellow or white with some red hue, although the most common is white. It does not resist frost very well, if you have it in a place where you make sure that in winter the minimum non-lower temperature of the five positive degrees can even plant it directly on the ground in a rocky area.

Finally, it is important that it has good drainage, as the accumulation of water can be fatal for this cactus. When irrigating, experts recommend irrigating once a week in summer, once every fortnight in spring, once a fall and stop irrigating in winter, but I would say that if you live in an area where you cannot assure that in summer the substrate will be completely dry once a week has passed, if you risk to Mammillaria dying.
