Trichocereus sp. or torch cactus that is its common name, despite being a native of Argentina, has recently become a really important problem in South Africa occupying large areas of cultivation, leaving them useless for grazing. For this reason, studies began for the biological control of this species considered a weed.
This cactus has a columnar port, originating in the American deserts, it is a plant of very easy cultivation, rapid growth, and fine and small spines, from those that cost to remove. It requires direct sunshine and a frostless climate in winter. It can hold a frost as long as it is very mild and does not last long. It is one of the ideal species for weathering. It also has a dry, wet cold if it is not very intense and not for long.
The irrigation must be moderate, once a week in summer, once every fortnight in spring, once a month in autumn, and if you are in a place where winter is not cold or occasional, you can also water it once a month. If not, don’t have more till next spring.
The flowering occurs between late spring and early summer.
