Cactus Mammillaria Spinosissima f. Rubrispina Cristata

It is one of the most sought-after species by collectors.

I present you with one of the rarest Mammillaria species that exists and very little is known about it. Although the genus Mammillaria comes from Mexico, this species can be said to come from laboratories, as it is a genetically modified variety and this makes it a unique cactus. This is Mammillaria Spinosissima f. Rubrispina Cristata. We can find it under the common name of brain cactus.

It grows in fan form and is usually dark blue-green. It is three to seven centimeters wide and will not grow much in height, at most up to ten centimeters. Over time, brain pillows up to thirty (or more) in diameter will form. It has between twenty and twenty-five white radial spines, which, if you look at them, resemble hairs between four and six millimeters long. Between twelve and fifteen central red-colored spines stronger and more robust than the radial and also straighter and thicker at the base, between ten and twelve millimeters long. We can also see that along the axis through the cactus it is covered with wool.

The flowers can be from bright lilac, red to deep pink, twelve millimeters long and diameter and are surrounded by columnar stems. Personally, I have not had the opportunity to see it flourish yet. Its season is from late winter to all spring. When it is dead, it will produce a fruit that can be three colors: red, purple or greenish and this fruit will give way to a brown seed.

Finally, irrigation must be abundant in spring and summer (once every fortnight in spring and once a week in summer), once a month in autumn and no longer provide water in winter. You have to watch over the excess water, as this could cause the death of this fantastic specimen.
