Cactus Pleiospilos Nelii

It is convenient that you plant it in a pot if you want it to live a long time.

The Pleiospilos Nelii, originally from South Africa, I have always known it as the elephant-footed cactus. There is a variety exactly the same as this one, the only one that changes is the body’s color. This specimen is green with black dots throughout the surface, and the other variety called Pleiospilos Nelii cv. Royal Flush, instead of being green, is dark purple with black dots as well.

The leaves are fleshy, at most eight centimeters high and, like the Royal Flush and also the Lithops, through the gap in the middle two new leaves emerge, while the two more outwardly drying and are responsible for supplying the needs required by the plant. They make three or four changes to say it somehow and then the flower comes in the middle.

It blooms in spring, even if winter has been slightly warmer than normal, they can also do it in late winter. It offers us some fairly large flowers between five and seven centimeters wide, and the color is usually a mixture of orange at the tips and whitish yellow halfway towards the center. It needs to be possible all day in order to grow and develop well.

The irrigation must be rather scarce, we will only provide water when the substrate is completely dry. In winter, I advise you to water every month and a half, when it’s not very cold and above all, protect it from low temperatures and frost. Although some say that it can hold up to two degrees negative without suffering major ills, but I strongly recommend that you do not expose it to these temperatures, to which you see the thermometer drops from the five degrees positive, provide protection, such as taking it into the interior of your house and placing it next to a very well-lit window, and possibly having at least four or five hours of sunshine.

Finally, it is quite resistant to pests and diseases, you only have to watch with excess moisture, as this can produce fungi and stinks.
