Cactus Mammillaria Spinosissima

It is one of the most common species that can be found anywhere.

Mammillaria Spinosissima is undoubtedly one of the most famous cacti for anyone who collects cacti. It is not very difficult to know what his vulgar name can be, as everything is based on “Spinosissima”. So, we can find it as a spiny Bisnaga and we can find it almost everywhere in Mexico.

When it is small, it forms globular, blue-green and variously colored spikes (white, yellow, ruby, red or brown) that do not at first sight invite much to touch. Over time it changes in cylindrical shape and can reach thirty centimeters in height and have a diameter of up to ten centimeters.

It has a fairly large number of spines: ten to thirty are radial and two to seventeen are central. The flowers are also curious: they appear on top in a crown shape and are pink with reddish corners. They leave in the spring and on time in the fall. After the flower, the seeds emerge within a small, greenish fruit. Mammillaria Spinosissima is a species that holds the cold remarkably well, without exposing it to temperatures below two degrees negative. It easily supports warm and especially dry tropical climates.

Unlike other species, if you buy it and have it inside in a well-lit area and want to put it outside whenever the climate allows, you have to get used to change, otherwise you get it to burn and die. By that I mean that you have to gradually approach the sun.

Finally, irrigation must be moderate, once and twice a week in summer and spring, always ensuring that the substrate is completely dry and in autumn and winter, removing the water supply.

It has no great enemies other than excess humidity, cottony mealybugor snails (which, strange as it may be, always find the corner to enjoy this excellent snapper).
