Today I’m presenting you with a cactus that you don’t know much about. It is the Opuntia Cylindrica Minor Cristata. It is commonly called Idol Esmeralda and comes from Japan. It is a very unique, rare and very beautiful cactus that is a member of the Nopal family. The tips (or crests) that resemble rolling pads and are emerald green have white areoles and small spines. It is very slow growing and very easy to maintain. It requires only minimum maintenance.
It needs very direct and bright illumination throughout the year, only note when the time comes when the sun has stronger radiation to provide it with a little shade to avoid burns and to harm it if it is the case that you have it outside.
It can withstand soft frost if not very closely followed. It can hold temperatures of two or three positive degrees, but if you see that the cold must be abundant and for a long period of time, also provide some protection.
Like other members of the Opuntia family, it requires a minimum irrigation. Water it almost once a week during the growing season and reduce it or remove it during winters. Once a year you can consider fertilize with a specific product for cactus. If you lay too much or do not expect the substrate to be completely dry, you will make the roots rot and the plant dies.
Finally, flowering is a non-existent vision. It is very rare to see a flower in this cactus, as it almost never blooms.
