Cactus Rebutia Spinosissima

It is very unusual to have this cactus in collections.

Here we have Rebutia Spinosissima from Argentina, which we also know with the scientific synonym Rebutia hoffmannii. Within the species of Rebutia, there are three varieties that are Rebutia Hoffmannii, Rebutia Spinosissima and Rebutia Fiebrigii that differ only by the spines and shape of the stem, which is smaller, flat and with tubercles.

The spines are dense, very thin, white with brown tips, very numerous and hardly distinguish the central from the radials. It is suggested that it has between five and six central spines that are stronger and longer than the radial spines, which the latter make up about ten millimeters.

The flowers are a light brick red, darker inside, funnel-shaped, about thirty millimeters long and twenty-five to thirty wide. If we look at the flower in more detail, we will see that the pistils, which are white and fuses with the pale greenish color of the tube, attract a lot of attention. Next, it makes way for the small, spherical fruit, three to four millimeters wide and is curiously covered with scales and hairs. It also has very small elongated seeds, one millimeter long.

The irrigation must be moderated throughout the year, you can do the following: once a week in summer, once every fortnight in spring, once a month in autumn and stop irrigation when minimum temperatures are below six positive degrees. Be careful not to irrigate as long as the substrate is moist, but instead, you can produce a stinking at the roots and die of this spectacular and strange specimen.
